+XIn 1997, François-Paul Journe created for a friend a model equipped with a unique automatic movement housed in a round yellow Gold case, named CARPEDIEM. This piece features a dial with a wandering jump hour display around a central exposed balance wheel. Later, François-Paul Journe developed a wandering hours wristwatch with a hand-wound movement, almost mimicking the dial of the CARPEDIEM, though redesigned to fit into a Flat Tortue® case. However, busy with other projects, he decided to leave this model at the prototype stage... X...2022: Vagabondage I Gold - Caliber 1504.2. To complete the Gold trilogy, F.P.Journe presents this last iteration, which is however not an exact copy of the Vagabondage I Platinum introduced in 2004. Pointing to a gap of nearly 18 years, the Vagabondage I Gold features an updated movement, reference 1504.2, still manually wound, and a 45.2 x 37.5 mm case. As François-Paul Journe says: “The first Vagabondage can be considered as a prototype at the time. It also displays the day, month and often the moon phases. To accomplish this watchmaking feat, the movement must have a mechanical "memory" of 1461 days or four years. The mechanism is usually based on a differential gear system from the hour wheel and includes several hundred components, cogs, gears, levers and rockers. Despite their name, perpetual calendars will have to be corrected by one day on 1 march 2100, not through any fault of the mechanism but due to the Gregorian calendar, which rules that this year, as three centennial years out of four, will not be a leap year... X...A movement able to identify leap years has a real mechanical memory. A small toothed planet wheel connected to the month’s mechanism performs a complete rotation in four years. During the fourth year, this mechanism displays 29 February before directly moving on to 1st of march. Just as the moon moves around the earth, this planet wheel rotates on its own axis resting on a swivel wheel. The lacquer comes from the sap of the Urushi tree that grows is China, Japan or Korea. In its raw form, the liquid is highly poisonous to the touch, therefore the tree must be handled very carefully. The harvesting of the resin can only be done in very small quantities... X...Minase aims at celebrating traditional crafts and techniques from Japan and partners with famous urushi master Junichi Hakose for this edition. Together, they developed a serie of 4 Urushi makie watches around the theme of Japanese nature. Born in 1955 in Wajima-city Ishikawa, Junichi Hakose graduated from school at the time when Wajima lacquerware industry was in a boom. The industry thus offered good employment in the city and this is how Hakose started a 4 years, in his own words “extremely tough with no time to sleep” apprentice. Today, he’s one of the most internationally acclaimed Japanese lacquer artists, but his desire is to have his works used everyday by his clients. XKomon is a small form apposed side to side to create a pattern. It is very famous in Japan and used on kimonos, tableware or even, for Minase, on dials. For this watch, Hakose got his inspiration in the form of flowers, petals and leaves. The difficulty with this Komon dial was to not make it look monotonous or old-fashioned. To avoid this, Minase decided to divide the dial into three parts. The size of each pattern is particularly small and it was a challenge to Hakose, the limit of drawing with a brush. Here, the dial and the movement follow the curve of the sapphire crystal across its entire diameter. Respecting the hallmarks of Geneva’s fine watchmaking, the Highlife Chronograph Automatic alternates polished and brushed satin finishes on its case, its sides, and bezel. Two pushers appear, at 2 and 4 o’clock. They control the start/stop of the chronograph, as well as its reset. Their profile has been slightly tilted a few degrees so that they fit harmoniously into the profile of the case. The chronograph counters have an inward curved collar, offering a more precise reading of the chronograph indications. The fine graduation of its collar allows to read the 1/5th of a second. And what other name could it have other than: KUDOKE 3. As with the two previous models, the signature uniqueness of the HANDwerk collection is unmistakable in this timepiece. Again, the applied elements harmonize with the surface of the matte frosted dial, giving the watch a sophisticated simplicity. And yet, dial-wise, it’s quite different from its predecessors. Titled Grail Watch 8: Kudoke 2 "Starry Night", it is a limited edition of 30 pieces based on the Geneva Grand Prix-winning Kudoke 2 watch, redesigned with new details and a color palette reminiscent of painting the most famous of Vincent van Gogh. Kudoke 2 presents a wonderful sense of understated German neoclassical watch design, complemented by a touch of poetry - a celestial disc at 12 o'clock indicating 24 hours, with a day and night display.
