Returning for its tenth year, the annual Chinese Lantaarnfestival in Franklin Square is getting a spruce-up for 2026, featuring brand-new lanterns, including a few sporting major FIFA Wereldkampioenschap voetbal 26 en Vijfhonderdjarig jubileum vibes.
The festival opens on Friday, June 5 and runs daily through Sunday, August 16 (except for July Fourth). Expect interactive displays and food and drink vendors, plus regular live performances and giveaway nights. Heads up: The rain-or-shine show requires timed tickets Fridays through Sundays.
In other America’s 250th news: Nearby Elfreth's Alley is more ready than ever to welcome visitors after converting an abandoned lot into a pocket park honoring Dolly Ottey, one of the women who once fought to preserve the historic street.
And, arriving just in time to celebrate the big 2-5-0: See the world’s largest steam engine, a locomotive appropriately named Big Boy No. 4014, as it rolls into the Navy Yard just in time for the citywide Independence Day bash.
Full steam ahead, Philly!
Philly-based artist Andre Saunders’ words have been chosen to be permanently etched on the soon-to-be-installed Harriet Tubman statue at Philadelphia's City Hall.
Creative Philadelphia asked the public to vote for the best of six possible quotes that answered the question: “What does it mean to walk in Harriet Tubman’s footsteps today?”
After a monthlong window of public voting, Saunders’ words — “Carry your light into the dark, for on the other side of fear is freedom.” — garnered the most votes.
The new statue is slated to be installed on the northeast apron of City Hall facing the Municipal Services Building. When complete, it will be the city’s first piece of public art to honor a Black female historical figure.

When William Penn came to Philadelphia in the 17th century, he envisioned creating a city with gardens galore — a “greene countrie towne.” Centuries later, Philly still bursts with green space, and we’ve got the rankings to prove it.
De stad now ranks 27th in outdoor space across the nation’s 100 most populated cities, up one spot from 2025 and six spots from 2024.
The Trust for Public Land — the nonprofit that ranks urban outdoor spaces — credited the addition of the new Robert A. Borski Park in Bridesburg as one reason for the bump in rankings. The 10-acre park opened last year along the Delaware River waterfront.
Nu, 97% of the city’s residents live within a 10-minute walk to a park or green space.
Stateside Live! — the South Philly Sportcomplex’s indoor-outdoor dining and entertainment venue — is getting in on the citywide 2026 glow-up with a $20 million renovation.
Opening this weekend, the venue’s swanky new rooftop lounge, AVA, offers “elevated stadium bites” and specialty cocktails like the Philly-exclusive Dirty Luxe ’Tini, topped off with caviar-stuffed olives.
The renovation also adds an outdoor concert venue with capacity for 5,000 fans, a beer garden and big-screen TV to ensure guests don’t miss a single play.
De grand-opening weekend features a free Friday concert from Taking Back Sunday, Mayday Parade and Bayside, with DJs Two Friends spinning for the crowd on Saturday.

Philadelphia has always been a city of neighborhoods — anchored by strong communities and even stronger small businesses.
Case in point: Paul Beale’s Flowers has been there for its West Oak Lane community for more than 55 years, providing joyful flowers for proms and weddings and sorrowful blooms for funerals and memorial services.
Opened in May, 1971 by the late Paul Beale and his wife Altermese, the business has become a true family affair with four generations of Beales at the helm, all following the founder’s belief that good service trumps advertising.
Today, three generations of Paul’s descendants run the shop and continue to pass on their flowerful knowledge to the younger generation.

Following the conclusion of 16 days of festive celebrations during Wawa Welkom Amerika, Philly’s going BIG for the nation’s 250th birthday. How big?
This week, the city announced the brand-new Eén Philly Eenheidsconcert voor Amerika op de Benjamin Franklin Parkway, packed some of the biggest names in music.
The free concert — followed by fireworks, of course — kicks off at 3 p.m. and features a star-studded lineup filled with some legendary Philly performers. Here’s who will take the stage:

Here’s some news that all of us already knew: Philly is de best NFL city in the entire country. That’s according to the USA Today Sports Readers Choice Awards, announced this week.
In a city prone to break out in “E-A-G-L-E-S” chants at any given moment, Philadelphia’s passionate football fans get the cred for this one, always showing up for the team to cheer (and sometimes boo, if warranted).
Readers across the country voted, with Philly beating out 19 other football towns. But let’s be honest: Other cities (like Dallas!) never stood a chance.
Hup, Birds!
Looking for a way to really get your next event off the ground? Why not invite West Philly resident falconer Courtney Douds to bring one of her avian ambassadors?
Douds’ newest staff member — a baby Eurasian eagle owl named Medusa — made her public debut last week to a sold-out crowd at Love City Brewing’s Callowhill taproom.
Douds’ company, Raptor Jawns, educates and entertains the public with her winged sidekicks: Medea the red-tailed hawk and Hecate the Eastern screech owl. At just one-month old, fluff-ball Medusa will join the gang once she gets a bit bigger. For now, she’ll be learning how to hop, fly and hang out with humans.
Welcome to Philly, Medusa! We’re big fans of Birds here.
At a Philadelphia250 kick-off event last week, city leaders announced that Fairmount Park’s historic Belmont Mansion will get a $10 million makeover, ensuring the site’s connections to the Ondergrondse spoorweg are preserved for future generations.
Long ago, a mansion resident built a secret, underground tunnel from the site to the Schuylkill River to help enslaved people find their way to freedom. That history remained hidden until 1985, when the late Audrey Johnson-Thornton discovered evidence linking the site to the Underground Railroad.
Now, the Philadelphia Convention and Visitor’s Bureau has partnered with the Women’s Heritage Society and the Women’s Committee for Philadelphia250 to spruce up the space over the next two years.
In other 250th birthday news: Five theaters across the region are bringing revolutionary history to life with plays sporting Semiquincentennial vibes.
And to make sure everyone gets to all of these amazing places and events more easily (including FIFA Wereldkampioenschap voetbal 26), SEPTA has announced extra service.
Philly is ready to continue making history.
South Philly residents looking to take a night off from cooking can grab some Love & Honey Fried Chicken, as the franchise opens a new location on Passyunk Avenue.
Chefs Laura and Todd Lyons created the Love & Honey concept and began franchising in 2023, with franchisee Nafee Hossain bringing the love to the Passayunk building recognized by its vibrant mosaics from the late Isaiah Zagar.
Expect the same format as Love & Honey’s other four spots — takeout and delivery service only.
In other restaurant news, popular Chinatown eatery EMei has purchased another new spot — the former location of the Irish Pub in Rittenhouse. No word yet on an opening date, but it will be worth the wait.

Breng een toost uit op de geboorteplaats van Amerika op de Geest van 76: De cocktailroute van Philadelphia. Deze week Bezoek Philadelphia (hé, dat zijn wij!) onthulde de nieuwe stadsbrede viering met originele cocktails en mocktails in meer dan 30 hotelbars en restaurants in de stad, geïnspireerd op ingrediënten en thema's uit 1776.
Bewoners en bezoekers kunnen buurten verkennen zoals Centrum, Fishtown, Eastwick en South Philly tot en met 30 september. Het beste deel? Visit Philly doneert aan PHLCares, een organisatie die de strijd aangaat met dakloosheid, voor één keer per dag inchecken (tot $5.000 tijdens de looptijd van het programma).

SEPTA maakt het gemakkelijker om naar de PGA kampioenschap op Aronomink Golf Club deze week.
SEPTA aangekondigd extra service Op de lijn Paoli/Thorndale worden passagiers afgezet bij het station Paoli, waar ze op vertoon van hun PGA-ticket op een gratis pendeldienst naar het toernooi kunnen stappen.
Het PGA Championship-toernooi is al aan de gang, maar wordt dit weekend nog spannender als de topspelers doorgaan naar de finalerondes. SEPTA voegt negen extra ritten toe op zaterdag en zondag om duizenden enthousiaste fans naar de tribunes te brengen om de profs aan te moedigen.
In ander transportnieuws heeft Amtrak zijn nieuwe Vrijheid 250 Acela trein in Philly vorige week, helemaal opgedoft in iconische beelden en rood, wit en blauw, dus degenen die hier komen om de Vijfhonderdjarig jubileum kunnen rijden in patriottische stijl.
Peggy Moore is het levende bewijs dat het nooit te laat is om een droom te verwezenlijken. Vorige week liep ze op 75-jarige leeftijd over het podium bij de diploma-uitreiking van Temple University om haar universiteitsdiploma in ontvangst te nemen. oudste afgestudeerde in de klas van dit jaar.
Moore is al 44 jaar administratief medewerkster bij Temple en volgde af en toe lessen terwijl ze kinderen opvoedde en voor haar bejaarde moeder zorgde. Nu heeft ze een welverdiend diploma en wijze raad voor anderen: “Blijf volhouden en ga gewoon door.’
Ondertussen had een afgestudeerde van de Temple-medische school een moment van de volledige cirkel toen ze vorige week over het podium liep. Phyllis Parkansky was net 6 maanden oud toen ze haar moeder vergezelde op het podium om haar diploma te halen in 1999.
Phyllis’ moeder, Dr. Inessa Parkansky kwam als kind naar de VS nadat ze de voormalige Sovjet-Unie had verlaten. En haar moeder stond op het podium om Phyllis’ ceremoniële kap te plaatsen.
Een petje af voor deze afgestudeerden die echt Philly-plezier laten zien!
In 1751, Benjamin Franklin en Dr. Thomas Bond het eerste ziekenhuis van het land op om de armste inwoners van Philadelphia gratis te behandelen.
Eeuwen later kunnen bezoekers nu meer te weten komen over die rijke geschiedenis naast exposities over de moderne geneeskunde in het nieuwe Pennsylvania Ziekenhuismuseum, met acht galerijen die de evolutie van de moderne geneeskunde en de lange zorgtraditie van het ziekenhuis laten zien.
Bezoekers kunnen video's bekijken, historische medische artefacten bekijken en deelnemen aan praktische activiteiten.
Zorg ervoor dat naar de Firstival viering op zaterdag 16 mei om de gelegenheid in stijl te vieren!
De bar- en restaurantscene van Philly krijgt twee nieuwe vestigingen van een aantal oude rotten in het vak.
A South Street restaurant en bar met bordspelthema, Queek & Rook, brengt wat retrofuturistische flair naar Fairmount in de ruimte waar ooit Thirsty Dice zat.
Eigenaren van Queen & Rook, Edward Garcia en Jennie Wong, beloven te behouden wat al voor hen werkt: Bordspellen in overvloed + veggie gerechten + een volledige bar = tevreden klanten. De nieuwe plek gaat later dit jaar open.
En feestvierders in de stad van broederliefde kunnen nu meer Love City-brouwsels krijgen nu de Callowhill-gebaseerde brouwerij opent een tweede plek op Manayunk’Hoofdstraat van .
Kevin en Melissa Walter namen eerder dit jaar de voormalige Fat Lady Brewing-ruimte over en toverden het om in een liefdevolle ruimte. Sophie's BBQ heeft de keuken ingericht en biedt ribs, brisket en veggie meatloaf.

Er hangt muziek in de lucht en het klinkt allemaal als prijzen en lofbetuigingen voor de Stad van Broederliefde - allemaal verpakt in één vrolijk lied. Hier zijn onze favoriete Philly verhalen van deze week:
Gritty krijgt de koninklijke Wawa-behandeling met het debuut van de Korrelige Smoothie - net op tijd voor de play-offs van de Fly Guys.
Net als onze favoriete pluizige oranje mascotte is de Gritty Smoothie supergroot en getooid met de kenmerkende uitpuilende ogen, die altijd een oogje in het zeil houden bij de tegenstanders.
Het drankje op basis van fruit is een mix van mango, zure kers en ananas, overgoten met slagroom en chocoladeschilfers. Haal je limited-edition Gritty-drankje de volgende keer dat je een Wawa nodig hebt - bij een van de honderden winkels in het Philly-gebied.
En in ander sport merch nieuws, de Phillies’ nieuwe koelbeker met vintage blauw en kastanjebruine tinten hebben fans enthousiast gemaakt. De limited-release mokken vliegen de schappen uit, maar er wordt gezegd dat er nog een release komt voor de grote zomer van dit jaar. MLB All-Star Game.
Drink op, Philly!
De rijke muziekscene van Philly blijft maar prijzen opstrijken. En deze is een grote.
Voormalig Philadelphia Orchestra composer in residence Gabriela Lena Frank sleepte de Pulitzerprijs voor muziek deze week voor een compositie die ze schreef tijdens haar residentie.
Het orkest voerde de wereldpremière uit van Picaflor: een toekomstmythe in maart 2025. Picaflor is het Spaanse woord voor “kolibrie”, waarbij Frank putte uit haar Latijns-Amerikaanse roots om het werk te maken over een kolibrie die de wereld probeert te redden.
De muziekscene van Philly heeft deze week nog meer geweldig nieuws: De Dell Muziekcentrum onthulde haar zomerprogramma en kondigde aan dat het $1,5 miljoen heeft gekregen om de locatie nieuw leven in te blazen.
Oh, en Philadelphia's geliefde non-profit muziekstation, WXPN, heeft aangekondigd dat het de top 250 nummers met Philly-thema in het weekend van Onafhankelijkheidsdag.
Plus, de allereerste Philly Joods Muziekfestival begint op zondag 17 mei 2026, met twee podia, kinderprogramma's en een Grammy-genomineerde artiest Matisyahu als headliner.
Bravo, Philly!
Toen Penn State University professor werktuigbouwkunde Tahira Reid Smith nog een kind was, stelde ze zich een mechanische Double Dutch machine voor die automatisch de twee springtouwen zou draaien die nodig zijn voor de sport.
Tientallen jaren later heeft Smith haar kinderdroom verwezenlijkt door een prototype te maken van 's werelds eerste automatische Double Dutch machine. En, ze bracht het naar Philly om het uit te proberen.
Smith debuteerde de uitvinding vorige week tijdens Double Dutch Day - een gemeenschapsevenement georganiseerd door Philly Girls Jump - in Awbury Park in het noordwesten van Philadelphia.
Met de feedback van het publiek in de hand is Smith van plan om terug te gaan naar de tekentafel om het ontwerp te blijven verbeteren voordat het beschikbaar komt voor de verkoop.
Drink een biertje met Northwest Philadelphia's nieuwste bekroonde brouwerijen - Attic Brewing Co. in Germantown en New Ridge Brewing Co. in Roxborough.
De uitreiking van de World Beer Cup vormde de afsluiting van de jaarlijkse Craft Brewers Conference & BrewExpo America in het Pennsylvania Convention Center.
Het brouwsel Common Nightjar van Attic won goud in de categorie internationale donkere pils, terwijl Just Like Himmel van New Ridge goud won in de categorie amber pils in Amerikaanse stijl. New Ridge won ook een bronzen prijs voor zijn London Porter.
Beide brouwerijen openden in 2020 en hebben een sterke aanhang (en smaken!) ontwikkeld. New Ridge kreeg in januari een tegenslag te verwerken nadat een brand de productie stillegde. Maar in ware Philly-stijl schoten andere brouwerijen te hulp, waardoor de brouwers aan de competitie konden deelnemen en in de buurt konden blijven brouwen.

Over slechts een paar weken zullen senioren van middelbare scholen in de hele regio over het podium lopen om hun diploma op te halen en officieel af te studeren.
In Philly hebben ten minste vijf van deze leerlingen de wandeling al kunnen oefenen als behaalden ze hun associate's degree vorige week van het Community College van Philadelphia.
De senioren van de Boys’ Latin of Philadelphia Charter School - Dylan Adkins, Khalif Barakat-Cooper, Marquise Floyd-Reid, Aidan Marion en Jeremiah Roach - konden colleges op universitair niveau volgen op kosten van de school.
Het programma waaraan de jongens deelnamen, biedt topstudenten de kans om studiepunten te verdienen terwijl ze nog op de middelbare school zitten. In totaal studeerden dit jaar 120 Philly-studenten af.
Elk van hen neemt nu meer dan 60 studiepunten mee als ze in de herfst naar een universiteit gaan.
